The Super Sunfish / SOL 2.0: A Classic, Reimagined

May 5, 2026

There is something about the Super Sunfish that stuck with people. Introduced in 1974, the Super Sunfish offered a different take on the most popular boat ever built. It kept the simplicity of the Sunfish that everyone already loved, but it gave the community a new way to experience it.

For a decade, from 1974-1984, the Super Sunfish presented a different kind of sailing experience. Not something entirely new, but something that built on a boat that people already loved. The original Super Sunfish wasn’t about reinventing the Sunfish, it was about offering another way to experience it. A different feel and balance than what people were used to. It gave sailors a chance to step slightly outside of their standard set up, while still keeping everything that made Sunfish approachable in the first place.

Reimagined for Today

Over the past six months, we have been testing a modern take on the original concept. Refining it with today’s materials and with the goal of creating a lightweight, balanced, and easy-to-use rig that adds another dimension to the Sunfish and SOL. The result is the Super Sunfish / SOL 2.0. At its core, the Super Sunfish / SOL 2.0 expands your experience by adding some modern features to make sailing your Sunfish or SOL simpler and more fun! The classic lateen rig will always be our go-to. This is simply another way to experience the boat you already love. Not a new class, just a new option.

Design Brief

The Super Sunfish / SOL 2.0 was designed specifically for the North American sailor where winds are traditionally lighter than the rest of the world, and for recreational sailors who want a fun rig without the bells and whistles of a race boat. This wasn’t designed with racing in mind; instead, we envisioned a leisurely experience. But of course, sailors will be sailors, and however you choose to use it, the goal is simple: get on the water and enjoy it.

This rig was developed for the above concept, not to be faster than other boats. However, in preliminary testing we noticed that this rig is a bit faster and points higher than the traditional lateen rig.

What's Different

The new rig introduces a series of thoughtful updates designed to improve feel, control, and comfort on the water:

  • A lightweight carbon fiber mast and boom for a more responsive feel along with added stability through less weight aloft.
  • Increased sail area (80 sq ft).
  • A radial-cut furling sail with vertical battens making it possible to reduce sail area by rolling the sail around the mast, and simple storage by rolling the sail up and attaching the clew strap to the hook sewn to the sail.
  • Higher boom height for improved comfort and visibility.
  • 4:1 center or 2:1 rear sheeting options.
  • Center sheeting allows for additional purchase to lighten the load and eliminates the mainsheet dangling over your head in maneuvers.
  • A longer foot to improve overall balance.

Each change works together to create something that feels familiar but is noticeably refined. What you’ll notice first isn’t speed, it is feel. The control feels more natural and movements are smoother and more responsive. It’s a setup that feels more stable and balanced and gives more control across a wider range of conditions. It’s still as approachable and simple as the original Sunfish, there is just more to enjoy.

Pricing:

$3,295 including carbon mast, boom, Dacron sail, all blocks and line.

Early access pricing of $2,995 until May 1st.

While this is an investment, it is in the same ballpark as a carbon ILCA/Laser rig, which has a carbon mast but aluminum boom.

If you’re looking to pick up a new Sunfish or SOL with this rig, you can save the cost of the traditional rig with the starting price at $8,195 with wood blades and $8,495 with composite. New boats will also come with center sheeting backing plates and eyestraps installed.

Upgrades:

With a different center of balance, pairing this setup with the high aspect AeroSouth rudder provides enhanced control and an even lighter helm.

We highly recommend upgrading to the high aspect AeroSouth rudder for $395 or $200 with a new boat. This rudder eliminates any load on the helm and makes for a much more enjoyable sailing experience with this rig or the traditional rig.

For those that like to sail in high winds and want extra speed, you can upgrade to the high performance for $409 or $159 with a new boat.

Upgrading your current boat:

For anyone with an older Sunfish or SOL:

This rig can be used with rear sheeting with 2:1 mainsheet purchase with no modifications.

If you’d like the perks of the 4:1 center sheeted mainsheet you will have to do the following upgrades:

Sunfish: Eyestraps must be added each side of the front of the cockpit deck for a bridle to allow for center sheeting. A kit with eyestraps and backing plate is $55.

SOL: Eyestraps must be added to each side of the front cockpit deck through adding an inspection port to the front of your cockpit and installing backing plates.

Available Soon!

The Super Sunfish / SOL 2.0 rig will be available mid-June 2026, and pre-orders are open now.

If you’re interested in learning more or placing a pre-order, we’d love to hear from you!
