America is celebrating its 250th anniversary this year! It is common to think about history through famous events and milestones, but some traditions are built through everyday experiences passed from one generation to the next. For countless sailors, one of those traditions began in a Sunfish.
Making Memories Since 1952
If you were to ask a hundred sailors where their sailing story began, you would get a hundred different answers. We have heard stories ranging from summer camp to family vacation rentals, and even first dates on lakes. While the stories may be vastly different, one boat seems to appear again and again in those stories: the Sunfish.
For many, it was the first boat they ever sailed alone. It was the boat that taught them “tiller towards trouble” and the difference between port and starboard. It is the most approachable and popular boat, and new sailors have proven time and time again why it is so good to learn on. The simplicity of the Sunfish is exactly why its popularity has sustained through decades. Over the years, it has become a boat that families share across generations. Grandparents pass along lessons they learned decades ago, parents teach their children, then those children introduce their friends to sailing for the first time. The boat itself may be simple, but the memories created on it are meaningful and complex.
#MySEROStory
One of the most rewarding parts of carrying the Sunfish legacy forward is hearing the stories that surround the boat. Through #MySEROStory, we have had the privilege of hearing from sailors across the country whose memories span decades, generations, and countless bodies of water. While every story is unique, they all reflect the lasting role that the Sunfish has played in bringing people onto the water and into the sailing community.
While many of the stories we hear look back on summers that have long passed, new memories are being made on the iconic boat every day. As America celebrates 250 years of history, we are looking ahead to another milestone. In 2027, the Sunfish turns 75. And if the stories we’ve heard through #MySEROStory are any indication, the next generation of memories is just getting started.
Now we’d love to hear yours. Whether your Sunfish memories come from summer camp, family vacations, racing with friends, or something else, share your story on Instagram or Facebook with #MySEROStory. Together, we can celebrate the moments that have made the Sunfish a part of so many lives, and inspire the stories still to come!
