For generations, the Sunfish has been more than just a boat. It has been the beginning of something bigger: the first sail, the first summer camp, or the first step to a lifelong passion for the sport of sailing. In lakes, summer camps, and coastlines around the world, the Sunfish has worked its way into the hearts of countless sailors.

And now, as of April 2025, it’s officially back home.

This year, SERO Sailing brought Sunfish production back to the United States. Now that it is back to where it all began, every boat is hand-built with care in Marine City, Michigan, honoring a legacy that spans over 70 years. The return to domestic manufacturing is more than a logistical shift, it is a tribute to the generations of sailors who have loved, raced, taught, and grown up on this timeless boat in the United States.

Your SERO Story

We have received hundreds of comments from avid Sunfish lovers who have shared their Sunfish story and often, this is where it all began for their sailing story. “Like a gazillion kids, it was the first boat I ever sailed on,” shared Peter Harrison in the comments of a recent post. Other followers echoed that sentiment, remembering childhood summers spent on the Sunfish in Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, St. Martin, Key West, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Michigan (our personal favorite) and everywhere in between!

These memories are not rare. In fact, this is one of the many reasons that the Sunfish is so iconic. It’s where it all began for so many. From Olympic sailors to weekend lake cruisers, the Sunfish has been countless peoples’ introduction to wind, water, and the wonder of sailing.

Rick Day commented that Sunfish are “Ageless, timeless boats. I started in one and could retire in one!”. This is the spirit that we are proud to carry forward: a boat that sets the foundation for a lifetime of sailing.

A Legacy Built to Last

Today, every Sunfish and SOL that leaves our factory in Michigan carries with it the values that define our sport: freedom, fun, and a deep connection to nature and community.

We’re not just building boats – we’re building the next generation of memories. The next sailor who will teach their child. The next camper who will fall in love with sailing for the first time. And even the next story someone will tell decades from now, starting with “The Sunfish is where it all began”.

Join the generations who’ve discovered the magic of sailing on a Sunfish or SOL.
